Early detection of breast cancer saves lives

The first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a woman's mammogram before it can be felt or any other symptoms are present. Early detection of breast cancer through monthly breast exams and yearly mammograms after the age of 40 offers the best chance for survival.

Digital mammography is superior technology
Technology advances in the development of mammography equipment have led to enhanced detection and safety measures for patients. The Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (June 2005) found that digital mammography detected up to 28% more cancers than film mammography in women younger than 50 years of age, premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and women with dense breasts. Through electronic manipulation, digital imaging can detect subtle differences between normal and abnormal tissues and can result in fewer patient follow-up procedures. Updating Halifax Regional’s Imaging Center with the best technology, environment, and training
will provide the women of our region with the safest, quickest, and most accurate service. Because there is no film to develop, digital images will be available for immediate evaluation by our radiologists allowing for quicker results to reach the patient and lessening the anxiety associated with the wait.

Our region is in dire need of technological advancement
Even though breast cancer awareness has grown as technological advances have been made, over the last five years the
number of breast cancer cases detected in our area has lagged behind the state average, and the mortality rate has increased by 17%. A community facility offering digital mammography will provide the essential service that will reverse this local trend.

Halifax Regional is essential to a healthy community
The Healthcare Initiative seeks to address our community’s challenge by:

  1. Installing new digital equipment and technology
  2. Providing a healing patient environment

The total estimated budget for the Healthcare Initiative, installation, interiors, and training is $650,000. Updating our Imaging Center with the best technology, environment, and training will provide the women of our region with the safest, quickest, and most accurate service. In addition, our training and hiring practices have produced a superior hospital staff that allows us to deliver high-quality patient services. Halifax Regional is the area's safety net, caring for all patients who seek medical care. We never close, and the lights are always on for our friends, families, and neighbors.
